How Model Space and Paper Space Work Together In AutoCAD

In this article, you’ll learn how model space and paper space work together in AutoCAD.

Let’s begin...

All drawings have two parts. There’s the model space and the paper space. Let’s take a look at each one.

First, there’s a 3D area known as the Model Space and it’s where the original drawing begins. The dimensions you choose are based on the desired scale for size - one unit represents a centimeter, inch or even a foot. These dimensions determine how the model space interacts with the paper space.

Second, is a layout area referred to as the Paper Space. When you switch to the Paper Space, the layout from the Model Space transfers as shown.

Both spaces are essential for creating your drawing in AutoCAD and now understand how they work together.

AutoCAD is an easy and quick method for creating your drawings.

Here is the simple step-by-step “Cliff notes” version.

Everything drawn in the Model Space is drawn at a 1:1 scale. You choose the dimension.

It’s then imported into the Paper Space where a scaled version of the drawing is placed.

Once you switch over to the Paper Space, a layout is created using your dimensions.

Each Layout is defined as a paper size such as A4, A1, A0 and is ready for you to insert Viewports.

While in the Paper Space, you can then insert Viewports that clip and crop the drawing to a boundary. It also represents it at a certain scale.

Together, the Model Space and Paper Space create the desired project drawing.

With only these two areas, you’ll have your desired drawings ready to show your clients. And they’ll be completed faster than your current method.
